How to Choose a Sleep Mask: Contoured, Classic or Wrap?

Three silk sleep masks, one contoured, one flat and one wide wrap style, laid side by side on a bed

A sleep mask looks like the simplest thing you could buy for your bedroom. Then you start shopping and find flat ones, molded ones with cups, and wide bands that wrap around your whole head. They all promise darkness. They do not all feel the same at three in the morning.

The right mask is mostly a matter of how you sleep and what bothers you. Here is a plain way to decide.

The short answer: choose a contoured mask if you dislike pressure on your eyes or wear lash extensions, a classic flat mask if you want something light and simple, and a wrap mask if straps bother you or you want the widest coverage. Whatever the shape, fit and fabric matter most.

The three shapes at a glance

Contoured (3D) Classic Wrap
Shape Molded cups over each eye Flat, padded panel Wide band around the head
Touches the eyelids No Yes, lightly Yes, lightly
Feels Structured, roomy around the eyes Soft and barely there Snug, like a soft headband
Good for Lashes, eye makeup, people who blink against a mask Everyday use, packing flat People who dislike thin straps, wider coverage
Worth knowing Takes more space in a bag Rests on the eyes More fabric on your head, so it can feel warmer

Contoured masks: room for your eyes

A contoured mask has a shaped cup over each eye, so the fabric sits around the eye socket instead of on the lid. You can blink freely inside it. That is the reason people with lash extensions, or anyone who finds a flat mask presses on their eyes, tend to prefer this shape.

Our 3D Mulberry Silk Sleep Mask is made this way, with contoured cups that do not touch the eyelids. The trade is a little more structure on your face, which some side sleepers notice against the pillow.

Classic masks: light and simple

The classic mask is the flat, softly padded shape most of us picture. It is the lightest of the three and the easiest to pack, and when it is made of silk the whole surface against your skin is smooth. It does rest on your eyelids. Most people stop noticing after a night or two. A few never get used to it, and they are the ones who should look at a contoured shape.

The Classic Silk Sleep Mask is our version, in 22 momme mulberry silk.

Wrap masks: no thin strap

A wrap mask is a wide band that goes all the way around the head. Because the pressure is spread over a broad strip of fabric, there is no narrow strap to dig in above your ears or leave a dent in your hair. The wide band also covers more of the face around the eyes, which helps with light that sneaks in at the sides.

The Silk Wrap Sleep Mask has an adjustable closure, so you set how snug it is. If you sleep very warm, keep in mind that a wrap puts more fabric on your head than the other two.

What to check, whatever the shape

  • Light at the nose. This is where most masks leak. A mask that sits close along the bridge of the nose and the cheeks blocks more than a thicker mask that gaps.
  • The strap. It should hold without squeezing. An adjustable strap or closure is worth having, since heads are not one size.
  • The fabric against your skin. The skin around the eyes is thin. Silk is smooth, so it glides over skin and lashes with little friction, and it is a breathable natural fiber. Cotton is soft and easy to wash, though it tends to absorb more of your eye cream. We compare the two in silk vs. cotton sleep masks.
  • Both sides. Check that the side facing your skin is silk, not only the side that shows.
  • Care. You will wear this on your face every night, so it needs washing. Here is how to wash a silk sleep mask without spoiling it.

Match the mask to how you sleep

  • Back sleepers can wear any shape comfortably.
  • Side sleepers usually do best with a flat classic or a wrap, since there is nothing molded to press into the pillow.
  • Travelers need a mask that stays put while sitting up. A contoured or wrap shape tends to hold better, and we cover the rest in how to sleep on a plane.
  • Light sleepers in bright rooms should put fit first: wide coverage and a close seal at the nose.

Questions people ask

Can a sleep mask be too tight?

Yes. It should stay in place when you turn over, and no more. If you wake with marks or a headache, loosen it or try a wider band.

Will a mask smudge my skincare?

A flat mask touches the skin around your eyes, so let eye cream sink in for a few minutes first. A contoured mask keeps the fabric off the lids altogether.

Will a sleep mask fix my sleep?

It makes the room darker, and darkness helps most people settle. It is not a treatment. If you have trouble sleeping most nights, talk to your doctor.

If you are still undecided, start from the thing that annoys you most: pressure on the eyes, a strap, or light at the edges. Then look through our silk sleep masks with that one thing in mind.
