They look alike in a product photo, and the names are used as if they meant the same thing. They do not. If you are choosing between a silk and a satin pillowcase, this is the one thing to understand first.
The short answer: silk is a natural fiber. Satin is a way of weaving, and a satin pillowcase is almost always made of polyester. Both feel smooth; only silk breathes like a natural fabric.
Silk is a fiber, satin is a weave
Silk is the fiber a silkworm spins into its cocoon. Satin describes how threads are woven: each thread floats over several others, which gives the fabric its smooth, glossy face. You can weave satin from many fibers, including silk itself. A silk pillowcase in a charmeuse weave is, technically, silk satin.
When a pillowcase is sold simply as "satin", though, the fiber is nearly always polyester, a synthetic made from petroleum. That is why it costs so much less.
How they compare
| Mulberry silk | Polyester satin | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Natural protein fiber | Synthetic fiber in a satin weave |
| Feel | Soft, fluid, a pearl-like sheen | Slippery, a harder, glassier shine |
| Breathability | Breathes and handles moisture well | Tends to trap heat |
| Friction on hair and skin | Low | Low |
| Static | Rare | More common |
| Care | Gentle, cold wash | Easy, regular wash |
| Price | Higher | Lower |
Where satin is a fair choice
Polyester satin does one job well: it is smooth, so your hair slides over it instead of catching. If budget is the deciding factor, or you want something you can wash without thinking, it is a reasonable start.
Where silk is worth the difference
You spend hours with your face on this fabric. Silk is breathable, so it does not hold heat against your skin the way a synthetic can, and it feels comfortable in summer and winter alike. It also feels different: softer, quieter and less slippery than polyester. If you sleep warm, have sensitive skin, or simply want a natural fiber next to your face, silk is the better pillowcase.
How to tell real silk when you shop
- Read the fiber content. It should say 100% mulberry silk. "Satin", "silky" or "silk feel" are not silk.
- Look for the momme. Real silk is sold by weight, usually 19 to 25 momme. Polyester satin has no momme.
- Check both sides. Some pillowcases are silk on top and polyester underneath.
- Be suspicious of the price. Genuine mulberry silk cannot be made for the price of a polyester pillowcase.
Questions people ask
Is satin as good as silk for hair?
For friction alone, satin comes close, because both surfaces are smooth. The difference is in comfort: silk breathes, polyester does not.
Is silk satin the same as satin?
Silk satin, often called charmeuse, is real silk in a satin weave. Plain "satin" is usually polyester.
