5 Reasons Why Sleeping on Silk is the Secret to Better Skin

You choose your cleanser, your serum and your night cream with care. Then your face spends the next eight hours pressed against a pillowcase you may never have thought about. Here is why that fabric is part of your skincare, too.

The short answer: silk is smooth and breathable, and it tends to soak up less of your skincare than cotton. It will not replace your routine, but it stops your pillow from working against it.

1. Less friction on your skin

Every time you turn over, your skin moves against the pillow. Cotton has a texture that grips; silk lets skin glide. Less rubbing is simply gentler, which matters most if your skin is sensitive or easily irritated.

2. Fewer sleep creases

The lines you see on your cheek in the morning come from skin being folded against fabric for hours. On a smooth surface the skin slides instead of bunching, so those creases tend to be fewer and softer. They are not the same thing as wrinkles, and silk does not prevent ageing, but waking up without pillow marks is a pleasant start.

3. More of your skincare stays on your face

Cotton soaks things up readily; it is what makes it a good towel. A smooth, fine silk tends to take up less, so more of the night cream you applied stays on your skin, not in your pillow.

4. It breathes

Silk is a natural fiber that lets air through and handles moisture well. A cooler, drier surface is more comfortable for your face, especially if you sleep warm.

5. It feels like something you look forward to

This one is not about the fabric's chemistry. A bed you enjoy getting into makes it easier to go to sleep on time, and sleep is when your skin does its repair work. The best night routine is the one you actually keep.

What silk will not do

  • It does not erase wrinkles or stop ageing.
  • It does not treat acne or any skin condition. See a dermatologist for those.
  • It does not replace sunscreen, which does more for your skin than anything you sleep on.

How to get the most from it

  • Choose 100% mulberry silk on both sides of the pillowcase.
  • Wash it once a week in cold water with a silk detergent.
  • Give your skincare a few minutes to sink in before you lie down.
  • Sleeping on your back puts the least pressure on your face, if you can manage it.
